Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama - Audition experience

Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama

I had my RWCMD audition on 8th February 2017 in Cardiff. My audition was at 9.00am so I had to get up super early in order to catch the train down to Cardiff in order to give myself time before the audition.

This was the first ever audition I had attended as I'm still 18 and still doing my A-Levels at college - so safe to say I was extremely nervous!

Once I reached the building (which is absolutely stunning inside and out) I walked up to reception and registered myself. I then took a seat in the cafe area with a few dozen other people. It was very tense as I didnt quite grasp who was here for an audition and who wasnt as the college is open to the public. Around 15 minutes later a student came to greet us all and shouted for the audtitonees to follow her up some flights of stairs.

We were then led into a large open room with 12 chairs (as there were 12 of us auditioning). The student then instructed us that we all have 15 minutes to warm up/get to know each other in the room by ourselves. At first, no one really spoke as everyone was clearly nervous that was until one of the younger boys spoke up and we all breathed a sigh of relief. We all chatted for a while until the two panellists walked in. They were so lovely! One man, one woman who made us feel extremely settled and welcomed. They spoke for around 2 minutes telling us who they are and their roles within the college.

Then came the audition. They go in alphabetical order therefore I was first up! I preformed my Shakespearean monologue first then my contemporary as I felt my contemporary had much more of a deeper emotional connection that the Shakespeare (as I chose to do a comedy). The panel made frequent eye contact and obviously wrote down notes as I preformed. I then sat down and watched the other 11 audtionees preform as you are not allowed to leave the room. The audition took around 45 minutes overall so it was extremely short and sweet. The college was wonderful though and I thoroughly enjoyed my audition.
